White gowns and rain

August 7, 2010 gave the Pacific west coast more rain in one day than in the entire month of July. This didn't seem to bother anyone, however, despite the fact that Christina and Paul were getting married outside on this exact day. Apparently there is even an old saying that rain on your wedding day means the couple will be blessed in their life together. The day itself was already a blessing; the ceremony was still uniquely beautiful with the addition of big black umbrellas, the reception was cozy and full of laughter, and the rain only made the children a little more dirty. No problem.

Why are weddings so important? Why is it such a big deal, really? My sister jokes about eloping just to escape the effort of planning her wedding. But when we talk about certain things, instead of draining our energy, it makes us excited. Hoping for great speeches, for funny skits and songs, for pictures that capture good memories, for the dancing when its all over. These are the things that make up a great wedding - how your 'village' of family and friends supports and sends you off. It is how we remember and celebrate faithfulness.

The truth is, we need these weddings just as much as the bride and groom need to share this celebration - to be uplifted and supported. Our involvement in the celebration means we are being recognized as part of a community, and part of a bigger story.
