I have about 3 drafts for blogs that have been abandoned due to time constraints or lack of motivation (or drifting off to sleep...).
However, such things cannot stop a college paper. So here is an excerpt from a paper for my Human Ecology class that I decided to turn into something a little more creative. Plus I just like writing about my family.
We were discussing something called "emergent properties"; it is an organized property that arises out of a complex system, and is more than the sum of its parts - like how 'vision' arises out of the complexities that make up our eye.
"The one emergent property that comes to mind when I think about my family is something called Beimerama.
My mom’s extended family has the last name of Beimers, and our get-togethers have developed the designated name of Beimerama. The Beimers are a complex system of all age groups; there is the usual younger generation dependent on the older generation for basic needs, and the older generation dependent on the other adults for less basic needs. From babies to teenagers to Oma and Opa, there are connections and interactions that lead to conversations, emotions, or just plain fun. When the family comes all together, every age group is within interaction, and the combination of each family’s self-organization begins. Together, meals are cooked, activities are planned, and people are contented. There is a fresh awareness of inheritance of personalities and facial features, of a shared background and future. When the whole family comes together, Beimerama happens. Sometimes it is after an extended period of time, and sometimes it happens multiple times in a year. The location might be a campground, a new home, or a wedding reception; each environment adds a different organization to the events, but the sum of its parts remains the same: Beimerama."
